Willie Gelhausen, a triple-threat back from Vernon, Texas, earned multiple All-Montana College Conference selections on the Hilltop. He was also considered among the best kickers in the state. As a freshman, vs. Intermountain College he scored 2 touchdowns (5 run, 23 pass), punted twice (43 yard average) and kicked a field goal and a PAT; and he rushed for the game-tying TD when Mount Saint Charles battled Washington State to a 6-all deadlock.

In 1928, Gilhausen baptized brand new Scullen Field with two scores in the win over Butte Centerville; and in the 20-12 victory over North Dakota State he punted 12 times for an average of 42.1 yards, highlighted by a 67-yard coffin corner kick. Known as “The Flying Ghosts,” the 7-1 Saints won the “quad-state” title with a 19-0 win over Montana State. His other highlights included 4 touchdowns – 3 rushing (long of 65), 1 passing – vs. Intermountain in 1929; and his final season, an opening 90-yard KOR to House, and EP conversion to tie Gonzaga University 13-13. Gelhausen was also a standout sprinter/hurdler for MSC’s track team.
