In 1927, Sidney T. “Sid” Smith was only a high school senior when he played end for the Mount Saint Charles College football team. He lettered four years in football and one in basketball, and went undefeated while boxing in several of the College Smokers. Known for his inspirational leadership, Sid was frequently mentioned as one of the most consistent if not most valuable “wing men” in the conference. Perhaps the highlight of his career was his efforts during the 6-all tie with Washington State in Pullman in 1928.

Smith, who served as president of the Student Body and Monogram Club, coached the Mt St. Charles prep basketball team in 1929 and ‘30. After using up his four years of eligibility, he served as The Hilltoppers’ end coach as a senior, when the 1931 squad went unbeaten, untied and unscored upon. Notre Dame alum and Saints head coach Wilbur Eaton, termed Sid Smith as “one of the most outstanding ends on both offense and defense” that he ever coached.
