Capital High product Paul Petrino started at quarterback for the Saints every game all four years on the Hilltop, missing only one offensive snap his entire college career. Carroll garnered four Conference championships (1985-88) and qualified for the NAIA post season every year, winning three play-off games. The Saints compiled a regular season record of 33-2, with two undefeated seasons, in 1986 (8-0) and 1988 (9-0).

At 5’9” and 175-lbs., Petrino, whose father was CC coach Bob Petrino – was one of only three Carroll gridders (at the time) to attain four first team All-Conference selections. A 3-time All-District 12 selectee, he was twice named the Frontier MVP, in 1987-88. As a junior, he was selected honorable mention NAIA All-American, and in 1988 Paul was chosen for two All-American teams; first team Kodak D-II and second team NAIA. 

Petrino left the Hilltop with at least 16 program records, highlighted by game marks of 438 total offensive yards;

season standards of 28 rushing touchdowns, 20 TD passes, 1259 yards rushing and 2870 total offensive yards; and career records 63 rushing TDs, 47 TD passes, 4146 yards rushing, 5502 yards passing, 325 pass completions and 9648 total offensive yards. Paul’s 1988 school mark of 16.9 points per game average led the nation in scoring.
