Tim Burton was a 4-year starter at defensive back and a two-time first team All-Conference selection his last two years. As a freshman, the Great Falls High product helped Carroll’s gridders to the program’s first appearance in the NAIA post season. The 1978 Saints achieved an undefeated (9-0, 6-0) Frontier championship, sparked by a defense that limited opponents to 7 or fewer points five times. They entered the NAIA D-II playoffs ranked No. 2 in the nation and riding a 10-game winning streak, before losing to Linfield College.

Carroll tied for the Conference title in 1980, and captured the crown outright again his senior year, with Burton serving as a co-captain. The 5’11”, 175-pounder was selected Frontier Defensive Player of the Week after a double overtime loss to Minot State, posting 11 total tackles (6 solo), one interception and a “collision hit” fumble recovery on the Saints’ 1-yard line. Burton was nominated for another POTW after their win over Chadron State. He led the team with 4 fumble recoveries, ranked No. 2 with 5 interceptions, and tied for third averaging 10 total tackles per game. Tim Burton was known as a tough, hard-nosed defender, who played both the run and the pass, equally well.
