Saints Athletic Hall of Fame
Gary Hoovestal arrived on the Hilltop in the fall of 1969 – via Eastern Montana College, the University of Montana – as a Spanish instructor and assistant football coach for the Saints. A native of Sanders, Montana, Gary spent the decade of the 1970s with Carroll’s grid staff in several capacities. As a coach, he served as both defensive coordinator and guided the defensive secondary; as a scout he studied in detail the opposition’s strength, weaknesses and tendencies; and as a recruiter, he traveled across the country bringing dozens of quality student-athletes to the Hilltop. Hoovestal served as CC’s head track & field coach in 1970-71, head coach of the East team in Montana’s 1974 High School East-West Shrine Game, and assistant director of the Carroll football camps in the mid-1970s. The Saints’ Gray Bull Athletic Scholarship is named in honor of the late Gary Hoovestal.
