A 4-sport athlete from Anaconda Central High, at 5’8”, 165-lbs, Tom Matosich was a first-line reserve and part-time starter at cornerback his first two seasons with Carroll, and even replaced a starting running back the last 2 games as sophomore. After missing much of his junior year due to injuries, Matosich was selected second team All-Conference in 1973. As a member of the 9-0 undefeated Saints, he was a key part of the defense which limited opposing QBs to a 39% completion rate while compiling 13 interceptions.

“Tom was usually assigned to the opponent’s best receivers,” according to his 1993 HOF nomination form. “He was an outstanding player who used technique, aggressiveness, tenacity and intelligence” to help make his team “one of Carroll’s best.” On the Hilltopper’s baseball team as starting centerfielder in 1971, Matosich finished the season with 4 hits during a doubleheader vs. Northern Montana, raising his batting average close to .275.
