Combining ruggedness with intelligence, college All-American Jim Michelotti was a two-time (1964 & ‘65) first team All-Conference linebacker on the Hilltop. The Saints went 5-3 in 1964, with the defense allowing only 62 points, for the paltry average of just 7.8 points per game. The Hilltoppers produced a pair of shutouts and four single digit tilts. Michelotti’s final year, the Conference runner-up Saints (6-2) permitted just 9.2 ppg, while ranking third in the nation in pass defense. Versus Northern, they held the Lights to a minus 5 yards rushing.

The defense also limited Westminster to 82 total yards, and against Montana Tech, the Orediggers managed only one first down and 78 total yards. The 5’9” 165-lb. Michelotti – a Butte Central product – finished with 72 tackles, 2 interceptions and a fumble recovery, while being voted the MCC’s “Outstanding Linebacker” by the league coaches. His other post season accolades included the team’s Mike Estenson MVP award, the Capital City Quarterback’s “Athlete of the Month” honor  and a 1965 NAIA honorable mention All-American selection. Jim also played second base on the Saints baseball team for a couple seasons.
