On the Hilltop from 1951-55, Chuck Sternhagen was a 2-time first team All-Conference football selection (1952-53) at halfback, and set four Saints records, two each on the gridiron and the running track. A 4-sport, muscular 170-pounder, with blinding speed, the “Glasgow Galloper” could either run around you or run over you. His best games were against Eastern, racing for four scores; vs. Western, rushing for over 220 yards, with sprints of 86 and 45 yards to pay-dirt, and another run of 81 yards; and scoring the winning touchdown over Weber State.

Chuck’s grid rushing records consisted of 14 TDs for a season and 26 for a career, with other long gainers of 65, 55, 49 and 44 yards. He earned three letters in track & field, two in hoops and one in baseball, for a total of 10 monograms. Sternhagen was the Saints high scorer in a trio of Conference T&F Meets he entered, while amassing 16 All-MCC ribbons – three each in the 100 yard dash (1955 champion, 1952 conference record 9.8 seconds), 220 (1952 and ‘54 champion, CC record 23.1), broad jump and mile relay.
