Jack Hunthausen, a versatile 4-sport athlete from Anaconda, played two seasons of basketball when the sport resumed after World War II, helping the Saints to a pair of MCC runners-up finishes. Hunthausen, who “shot on the run from all around the basket,” led the Saints in scoring with a 10.7 points average as a junior, including four 20-plus point games, and was declared Conference MVP. His final year he was better known for his defensive ability, making honorable mention All-Conference.

A triple threat on the gridiron, Jack played halfback/punter when football came back after the war in the fall of 1947. Perhaps his best game was a 2-touchdown effort versus Eastern Montana. He placed second in the pole vault at the 1948 Conference Track & Field Meet, as well, and was CC’s Jack Dempsey award recipient as the school’s best athlete. Father Hunthausen later coached Saints football to three league titles in the late 1950s.
