A Billings product, Ted Lechner played just his first two years on the Hilltop, but garnered All-Montana College Conference selections after both campaigns. Coach Jack Hunthausen described him as one of the “most consistent” linemen on the team. An offensive guard, linebacker and kicker/punter, in 1957 Lechner garnered first team All-Conference – very rare for a freshman. 

In the 7-all tie with Rocky Mountain, Ted booted the PAT to avoid the loss, and was considered among the outstanding players on offense and defense. Against Eastern Montana, he stood out on defense and “was in on almost every play” during the 12-6 victory. His sophomore season Lechner was tabbed 1958 second team All-MCC.
