A “burly” 6’6”, he was highly regarded for his inside scoring and tough rebounding. As a sophomore with the Hilltop cagers, Burns cracked the starting lineup late in the year, firing in 26 points in the second to last game vs. Rocky Mountain. He led the team in scoring over the last two seasons, averaging 18.8 points and over 15 ppg, respectively. As a junior, Burns was high-point man 14 times, while shooting 46.5% from the floor. He netted 20-plus points in 10 contests, and over 30 counters twice.

Pat averaged a double-double, at 11.3 rebounds per game – he ranked No. 3 in the league under the glass, and No. 4 in scoring – and was selected 1969 first team All-Frontier and honorable mention All-NAIA. In 1969-70, he garnered second team All-Conference. He produced 20-or-more points eight times, 30-plus twice (PR of 36 vs. Rocky), and was the team’s No. 2 rebounder. For his career, Burns achieved 10 double-doubles, highlighted by 33 points/15 rebounds against Eastern, 21 markers/18 boards vs. Northern and 35 points/10 rebounds against the College of Great Falls.
