Jim Flynn, an Anaconda Central grad, did not play sports his first year on the Hilltop. But not long after making the football team as a sophomore in 1949, he was calling signals as a “T” quarterback, and was considered a good runner and passer. But his forte was on the other side of the ball. The newspaper described Flynn as CC’s hardest hitting defensive player…“he hurls his 145-pound body at opposing players just like he weighed 225. He literally knocks himself out.”

Jim flourished as a senior co-captain, throwing 3 touchdown passes (long of 46 yards), running for a 72-yard TD, and intercepting a 65-yard Pick 6. The 1951 undefeated (4-0) MCC champion Saints’ defense – sparked by Flynn’s All-Conference bone-jarring play at defensive back – allowed their league opponents an average of just 3½ points per game. He also played two seasons each of basketball and baseball (1B, RF) for coach John Gagliardi, who called him Carroll’s most versatile hoopster.
