A 145-pounder from Wibaux, Ray Botch was a two-time first team All-Montana College Conference end, in 1931 & ’32. Mount Saint Charles went undefeated, untied, unscored upon 6-0-0 in 1931. His senior season in 1932 – with newly renamed Carroll College and against Idaho State in Pocatello – the score was deadlocked at 7-7 with 9 seconds on the clock, when the Saints took possession of the ball on their own 40 yard line. 

QB Cal Snyder hurled a 35 yard bomb to Botch, who raced the remaining 25 yards to pay-dirt for a 60-yard TD and the 13-7 victory. The ball was actually “in the air” when the gun sounded. “Ray was an exceptionally good blocker, short and stocky,” according to former teammate and coach Sid Smith. “He was an extraordinarily smart player, who knew where to be at the right time on every play.” Botch excelled in the classroom as well, graduating the Hilltop Magna Cum Laude.
