Gene Mallette, a native of Shelby, received a “special recognition” award for his outstanding work in Carroll College boxing smokers and state amateur tournaments. He won his first two Carroll smokers as a freshman and sophomore, before capturing both the State AAU and Midland Empire Golden Gloves 178-pound titles in 1969. Gene successfully defended his AAU title the next year, but lost the Midland Gold Gloves on a split decision. As senior year, Mallette garnered his fourth CC Smoker title, while avenging his loss at the 1970 Midlands and earning the 1971 Bishop Hunthausen “Outstanding Boxer” award.  

Mallette had made the starting lineup on the Saints football team as a 180-pound soph linebacker in 1968. His junior year, he was moved to defensive end, earning the IR’s Coca Cola “Player of the Week” after Carroll’s loss to Western, for being “instrumental in holding the potent Bulldog offense to one of its lowest totals of the season.” In 1970, Gene earned the same honor again after the 33-8 conquest of Northern Montana, posting 7 tackles and a fumble recovery in what was described as “the best game of his career.”
