Peoples was a three-time all-Frontier center from 1987-89, making the second team as a sophomore, and first team his final two seasons. Undersized at 6-1, 215 pounds, Peoples was a member of four conference championship teams, and played in seven NAIA playoff games. As a senior, he was voted team captain, and was named first team All-District. Petrino described Peoples as "physically tough and a great leader. Doug is a great technical blocker and a real key for us in the trenches." Petrino went on to describe the gridder as "the biggest over-achiever I ever coached." "Doug Peoples was the heart and soul of the 1989 team," former teammate John Michelotti said. "I'm convinced that if Doug were not there, that team may not have won the Frontier championship, instead of going undefeated in the conference."
