A 6’6” post from Billings, Jim Gusick helped the Saints to the 1966 NAIA Tournament. Considered one of the better defensive players in the conference, he was described as “a rugged rebounder and a capable scorer.” As a sophomore, he speared 13 boards in the win over Westminster. The next season, Gusick performed a double-double (12 points/13 rebounds) against Northern, and in the 120-111 loss to Westminster, Jim led CC to a team record for points, pouring in a game (and career) high 27 counters.
At Nationals in Kansas City, during the opening round contest vs. Bethune-Cookman, Carroll was clinging to a 90-85 lead with 2½ minutes on the clock. But when the Saints missed numerous free throws in the fading minutes, allowing the Wildcats to close the gap, “Jim Gusick hauled down several key rebounds to allow the Hilltoppers to run out the clock” and cement the 91-88 victory. He finished 1966 as the squad’s No. 3 rebounder (6.4 average) and No. 4 scorer (6.9 ppg).
