A versatile 175-pound broken-field master, Malta’s Denny Goodheart played running back, kick returner and defensive back for the Saints gridders in the late 1960s. As a sophomore in a 1966 win over Rocky Mountain, he scored twice, on an 82-yard kickoff return and a 44 yard Pick-Six. The next season, vs. the Golden Bears, he took a handoff on a counter play, raced through a hole, shook off a couple would-be tacklers and sprinted 40-yards to pay-dirt.

Goodheart was named the Hilltop’s “Outstanding Back” at the post season banquet. His senior year highlight was a 3-touchdown effort (two 27-yard receptions, 16-yard run) against Rocky. Denny was selected 1968 honorable mention All-Conference. He finished his career with 11 touchdowns; 5 rushing, 3 receptions (long of 53 yards), 1 KOR, 1 INT and 1 pass. In the squared circle, Goodheart went 2-0 at the Carroll Smokers, earning 1968s Bishop Gilmore Outstanding Boxer Award.
