Tom Konen arrived on the campus of Carroll College in the fall of 1979, as an All-State grid lineman from Butte High, and the newly crowned Class AA heavyweight wrestling champion. Konen cracked the Saints’ starting lineup mid-way through his freshman year against Western Montana – drawing the praises of coach Bob Petrino for his “good job at blocking back” – and went on to become a three-time All-Conference selection. He made second team offensive tackle in 1980, and first team his final two seasons, while helping CC garner Frontier titles all three years.

The Hilltoppers led the Conference in total offense in 1981, and the next year they led the District in passing (averaging 225-yards) and ranked no. 2 in total offense (384 ypg). In 1981, the 6’2”, 235-lb. Konen, whom coach Petrino described as “one of our great players,” made honorable mention All-District. After boxing in the 1983 Carroll Smoker, Tom kept involved with Hilltop football for several years after graduation, both as an assistant coach and a player in the Alumni Games.
