A 5’10” point guard from Billings Central, Eddy Birrer walked on to Carroll’s campus in the fall of 1962, and wound up serving as Saints’ co-captain during their first-ever NAIA Tournament appearance. After one season with the Junior Varsity, Eddy moved up to the Hilltoppers’ varsity in a reserve role the next two years, leading the team in free throw accuracy in 1965, at 88.5% (23-for-26).  He cracked the starting line-up his senior season, based mostly on his “continuous hustle, ball-handling, passing and leadership qualities.”

Playing most of the year with a broken thumb, Birrer scored double digits nine times and finished with a 6.7 points per game average. Among his best efforts were a trio of 14-point contests, 5 steals in the District 5 Tourney’s Game 1 win over the College of Idaho, and 11 points in the opening round victory over Bethune Cookman at Nationals in Kansas City. Birrer, who also ran distance for CC’s track team, was selected 1966 honorable mention All-Frontier.
