A speedy halfback from Butte Central, Bill Mehrens played on Carroll teams that were loaded with star-studded backfields all four years. But he was able to distinguish himself by garnering back-to-back All-Montana College Conference selections, capped off by All-American recognition his final season. His first touchdown on the Hilltop went for 46 yards as a freshman in 1951, and he went on to score four more times his first two years. As a junior, he tallied five TDs and was chosen second team All-MCC.

In 1954, Bill led the Saints in scoring with nine TDs and two conversions, for 56 points. Perhaps his benchmark game was a 3-touchdown effort vs. Billings, on runs of 39, 12 and 20 yards. When Carroll defeated Western in his career finale for their fifth straight Conference title, it was the blue-and-gold’s 21st consecutive victory in league play. Mehrens finished his career with 19 touchdowns (12 rushing, 7 receiving), was selected first team All-MCC and garnered 1954 Little Catholic All-American status.
