The Helena native earned 7 letters – 3 football, 4 basketball – at Carroll from 1937-41, along with multiple All-Frontier Conference selections. When the grid sport was revived on the Hilltop in the fall of 1937 after a 4-year hiatus, 6’0”, 190-pound fullback Art Harrell was lauded for his “good performance” in the opener versus Ricks College. Oftentimes he shared the blue-and-gold’s backfield with his older brother, halfback Charlie Harrell.

In 1939, the paper noted Harrell “played a good game” in the 13-0 win over Billings Polytech (Eastern), and in the 19-2 victory over Normal (Western) he rushed for 31 yards. As a junior, he was part of the 5-2 Saints’ 1940 Montana College Conference championship, their first league title in 9 years. On the hardcourt, Art was best known for his strong defensive play.
