HELENA, Mont. – The 13th-ranked Carroll College men's basketball team went on an 8-0 run in the second half to earn a 64-57 win and extend their perfect home record to 11-0.
The Saints and the Orediggers began the game locked at 13-13 with 9:55 remaining in the first half. Sophomore
Ryan Imhoff found
Matt Wyman for a fast break bucket to give the Saints a 17-13 lead with 7:17 left in the half.
Montana Tech tied the score at 21-21 before baskets by point guard
Zach Taylor and Imhoff gave Carroll a 25-23 halftime lead.
The Orediggers would take a 33-31 lead with 15:12 left in the game after a bucket by Jalen Coates, who finished with a game high 21 points. Carroll responded with 8-0 run that recaptured the lead at 39-33 with 10:24 remaining and never looked back.
Montana Tech would cut the lead to 47-46 with 6:56 left in the game. Guard
Kyle Nickol responded with the only 3-pointer of the game for the Saints from the corner off of a
Lorel Johnson assist.
Carroll, the number one free throw percentage team in the country, locked up the win by going seven for eight from the line in last 90 seconds.
Reigning NAIA Division I National Player of the Week,
Match Burnham, scored 17 of his 19 points in second half and recorded seven rebounds. Burnham has made 29 consecutive free throws after going 19-19 in his last game over the last three games.
Imhoff finished the game with 17 points and four blocks. Taylor recorded 12 points and two steals.
"I was really impressed with our guy's defensive effort." said head coach
Carson Cunningham. "Sometimes you have to win grinders and you can do that if you're playing great defense."
The Saints improved to 18-5 overall on the season and 11-2 in conference.
Carroll hosts third-ranked Lewis-Clark State on Friday for first place in the Frontier Conference. Lewis-Clark is 22-2 overall and 10-2 in conference play. The game is slated for 7:30 p.m.
