Carroll women's soccer faces MSUB in exhibition

HELENA, Mont. -- After a pair of road wins, the Carroll College women's soccer team will jump back into exhibition play as they host Montana State University Billings on Friday at Nelson Stadium.

It will be the third consecutive season the two teams have met. This season, though, the Saints will face the Yellowjackets (0-0) down in Billings, too.

"Both teams should be excited about this exhibition game," Saints coach David Thorvilson said.

"It's a tune-up as we turn around and face each other in a counter in two weeks. Although we have three games under our belt, we're still ironing out a few problems. And a game like this allows us to work on that."

The Fighting Saints (2-1) opened up the scoring floodgates during their past two games, combing for 11 goals in two wins. Makayla Welch leads the Saints with four goals, while Katie Martin and Brennah Rohnkohl each have a pair of scores on the season.

Carroll will look to keep that momentum up against a Yellowjackets team that returns three honorable mention all-Great Northwest Athletic Conference players from a season ago: Amanda Hemmen, Claire Tevaseu and Kailin Sandow.

While the Saints were in California their travel roster was pared down to 18 players. Back in the friendly confines of Nelson Stadium, the Fighting Saints will be at full strength.

"We get to see a little more depth," Thorvilson said.

This is one of the final few nonconference games before each match matters a little bit more -- especially when other Cascade Collegiate Conference members are getting results in their preseasons.

"Including this game, we only have three before we step into conference," Thorvilson said. "Eastern Oregon, Southern Oregon and OIT have already gotten results against Top 25 teams in the nation. We have to be playing our best when conference starts."

The game will also give Thorvilsona chance to coach against his alma mater, MSUB.

"I still owe a lot to the school and follow both programs," Thorvilson said. "We both get in-state athletes who have grown up with or against each other. It adds a little to the rivalry over the years."

The game will be streamed on Carroll Athletic's YouTube page and is set to begin at 2 p.m.
