HELENA, Mont. - The Carroll College Men's Soccer team fell 2-1 to Whitworth (Wash.) in their season opening game on Saturday afternoon at Nelson Stadium.
The Fighting Saints (0-1) let one get away from them in a tough season-opening loss to the Pirates, squandering a second half lead.
An exceptionally warm late-August afternoon saw an extremely slow moving first half. Neither team would score, while both teams combined for just four total shots in the frame.
Coming out of the break, Carroll struck first.
Just three minutes into the second half
Justus Herrmann (Weil am Rhein, Germany / FR) managed to break the game open when he beat the Whitworth keeper on a beautiful corner kick assist from
Adam Webster (Las Vegas, Nev. / JR).
The Pirates would respond in the 55th minute as Kincaid Sund would find the back of the net following a free-kick from just outside of the box, evening the game at 1-1.
In the 80th minute, an aggressive pursuit of a streaking Cole Friesen would prove costly for goal keeper Juan Muniz Navarette (Hermiston, Ore. / JR). Friesen would find a way to sneak the lightest touch over the charging goalie, with the ball just creeping over the line to give Whitworth a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish.
Up next, the Yellowjackets of MSU Billings will visit Helena on Thursday, September 5 at 5 p.m.
