CALDWELL, Idaho - The Carroll Men's Soccer team stayed within a goal until late and rattled the crossbar twice, but fell in a disappointing 3-0 loss to the College of Idaho on Friday evening at Simplot Stadium.
The Fighting Saints (4-5-2, 3-2-1) trailed only 1-0 heading into the 79th minute, but things would unravel in a hurry as they dropped their second conference match of the season and second-straight road loss in Caldwell.
The 1-0 deficit came from a penalty kick by the Yotes' Alfie Roffey in the 19th minute. Carroll goalkeeper Noah Jordan (Deer Park, Wash. / JR) proceeded to keep the Coyotes at one goal through the rest of the first half but the Saints would head to the break trailing by one.
The Saints came out of the break with more bite, tripling their shot output from the first half to the second. Pedro Teixeira (Braga, Portugal / R-SR) and Sam Loughton (East Yorkshire, England / SR) had early chances, and Nicolas Sanchez (Napa, Calif. / JR) sent one wide in the 52nd minute. In the 60th minute, both Rudy Zurcher (Bellingham, Wash. / SO) and Nils Benning (Kiel, Germany / SR) each forced a save from College of Idaho goalkeeper Yago Gonzalez just six seconds apart, but neither could find the equalizer.
Carroll's best chance of the night came in the 80th minute. Sean Balen (Mukilteo, Wash. / SR) and Enrico Paparelli (Sao Paulo, Brazil / R-JR) each hit the crossbar within six seconds of each other, but again the Saints would come up empty-handed.
It was a physical match throughout, with 42 total fouls called. The Coyotes drew four yellow cards. Carroll was shown yellow cards to Sanchez and Loughton, plus a team yellow, but it was red cards shown to Dane Quinn, Luis Barreto and Loughton that would ultimately doom the Saints.
Roffey added a second penalty-kick goal in the 79th minute, and the Yotes would also score one more goal in the 89th minute while playing with a two-man advantage to seal the 3-0 win.
Carroll finished with 11 shots to C of I's 12, but simply couldn't find a way to beat the Yotes' Yago Gonzalez.
The Saints will look to rebound tomorrow, taking on Eastern Oregon at 7:30 p.m.
