HELENA, Mont. -- The No. 25-ranked Carroll College Fighting Saints women's basketball team returns to the PE Center on Saturday to face the University of Providence Argonauts.
"Providence is a very experienced and talented team," Saints coach
Rachelle Sayers said. "They have probably the top scorers in the league in their starting lineup. They can all shoot it and they rebound on the offensive end like crazy."
The Fighting Saints (10-5, 2-1 Frontier Conference) started the week off with a big win over No. 11 Montana State-Northern in Havre, Montana. It was a game where the Saints started well and finished right.
Dani Wagner scored a team-high 15 points to lead the Saints on Tuesday.
Carroll sports a balanced squad. Wagner leads the Saints in scoring at 14.4 points per game, while
Christine Denny leads the team in rebounding (7),
Kamden Hilborn leads the team in assists per game (3.4).
As a team, the Saints are No. 3 in the NAIA in total rebound defense (28.7).
Providence also earned a victory over No. 11 MSU-N this week, defeating the Skylights in Great Falls 68-64 on Thursday evening.
In that game, Argonauts guard Emilee Maldonado scored 27 points on 11-of-14 shooting (79%) to lead her team. She will be a key for the Saints' defense on Saturday.
On the season Maldonado averages 14.2 points per game, while Parker Esary adds in 14.4, Bailey Cartwright scores 13.9 and Jenna Randich also scores in double figures with 11.1
"We will have to be at our best in transition defense, on the boards and limited touches to Parker (Esary) all night," Sayers said. "On the flip side, I know our kids are fired up to play at home and are excited to step on the floor and compete again. I expect high energy, a lot of flying around and a fast-paced, fun game to watch."
The Argonauts enter the PE Center with a three-game winning streak.
Last season, the Saints knocked off Providence 2-1, winning both games in Helena. The Saints have handled their business against the Argonauts in the PE Center, last dropping a game to UP (then UGF) in 2014-15 in Helena.
The game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
"I hope we pack the house for these games because both us and the men's team have our hands full and need our home crowd support," Sayers said.
For those who cannot be in attendance, a live stream will be offered via the Carroll Athletics YouTube Page. Fans can also hear the game on Rewind 94.9, called by Carroll College Saints talent Daniel Salle and Hall of Fame coach Gary Turcott. The game can also be tracked via live stats kept by DakStats.
