No. 24 Saints Hold Off (RV) LC State Comeback Bid

LEWISTON, Idaho - The No. 24-ranked Carroll Women's Basketball team picked up their fourth straight win to open the season, edging out (RV) Lewis-Clark State 59-55 in the final game of the LC State Classic at the P1FCU Activity Center on Sunday evening.

Although no longer in the same conference, the Fighting Saints (4-0) and Warriors (1-3) are plenty familiar with each other. Sunday's matchup marked the 35th meeting between the two schools dating back to 2004, with the teams meeting at least once in all but one season dating back to 2014. Carroll added to their advantage in the series, holding-off a second half Warrior run fo pick up win No. 22 in the time span.

Led by transfer guard Maddy Moy (Kalispell, Mont. / R-JR), the Saints jumped out to a six-point lead in the game's opening quarter. Moy was 4-5 from the floor for nine points in the first, while Jillian Kanuduch (Miles City, Mont. / SO) added five points of her own. Carroll forced seven Warrior turnovers in the frame, bringing a 19-13 lead into the second.

Three Saints scored four points each in the second quarter, as Carroll would continue to separate from LC State heading into the break. Gracie Millimen (Manhattan, Mont. / R-SO), Kennedi Niemann (Cody, Wyo. / R-JR) and Moy all scored four in the frame, while Moy continued her stellar start with five rebounds in the quarter as well, four more than any other player on the court.

While Carroll held a 36-24 lead at the halftime break, LC State would work quickly to erase it. Carroll struggled from the field in the third quarter, going just 3-14 as a team (21.4 percent). Meanwhile, the Warriors battled their way right back not only into contention, but into the lead. Tatum Brager and Kaylee Cordle combined for 17 third quarter points, neither missing on a field goal attempt, to help the host school power back and send the game into the fourth all knotted-up at 46-46.

Carroll's shooting woes continued from the floor in the final frame, but strong shooting at the free throw line paired with rebound control and a steady defensive effort would help the Saints grind out the four-point win. Moy, who shined throughout, was as important as anyone over the final ten minutes. She went 6-6 from the stripe, leading Carroll with eight points, three rebounds and a block in the clutch.

Moy was the MVP of the game, finishing with a 21-point, 11-rebound double-double after narrowly missing one yesterday. Both the points and rebounds were game-high marks for either team.

Kennedi Niemann and Jillian Kanduch combined for another 21 points, scoring 11 and 10, respectively, while Makayla Coleman (Bozeman, Mont. / FR) pulled down seven boards in the win.

The Saints will look forward to their home-opener later this week, as they host NCAA Division II MSU Billings in their annual Champions of Character Field Trip game, an exhibition contest Friday afternoon at 12 p.m. at the PE Center.
