Carroll men's soccer announces team award winners

HELENA, Mont. -- A trio of Carroll College Saints men's soccer players were honored for their accomplishments during the 2018 season.

As voted on by the players, senior forward Javi Porras and sophomore forward Nick Lowrimore were selected as the Team MVPs while freshman goalkeeper August Baker was noted as the team's Most Improved Player.

Porras, a senior from Las Alturas, Guatemala, led the Cascade Collegiate Conference in points per game at 1.71. He scored 12 goals in 17 games this season and added five assists. He had three game-winning goals for the Saints, who went 8-8-1 on the season, including a 3-2 upset win over Corban in the CCC Tournament. The Saints also went 2-0 in exhibition play.

"He's had an illustrious career here at Carroll both athletically and academically," Saints coach Doug Mello said. "He's a player who deserves everything that comes his way. He's been a team player since day one. He's played in numerous positions for us where we needed help. This year he was finally able to get back to his natural striker position where he responded with his 12 goals and five assists."

Lowrimore, a sophomore from Sandy, Utah, finished the season with four goals and four assists. None of those scores were bigger than his game-winning goal against Corban at the CCC Tournament -- a play that earned him a Halo Award for the Play of the Year.

"He's stepped it up every year," Mello said. "As a sophomore to be named most valuable player is a high honor. He's an incredibly talented player, who, when he sets his mind to it, can accomplish great things in the next couple of years for us."

Baker, a freshman from North Bend, Oregon, saw action in the goal in a few games this past season. Baker backed up Kaden Connor in goal and made the most of his opportunities.

"He was a sturdy back up throughout the season, however when called upon to start a couple of matches he responded with some great saves," Mello said. "As implied by the award, he is going to improve and get better. He has all the tools of a top collegiate goalie: size, strength, good attitude, good technical and tactical abilities."

Carroll's 2019 campaign begins Aug. 15 against Lethbridge.
