No. 8 Carroll kicks off Phoenix Frontier Classic vs. USAO

PHOENIX, Ariz. -- No. 8 Carroll College opens up play at the Phoenix Frontier Classic against the University of Science and Arts on Wednesday at 12 p.m.

"It's a big week for all of us," Saints coach Rachelle Sayers said. "We have teams from the Sooner Conference, teams from the GSAC and then obviously Our Lady of the Lake is a team that's usually in the Elite Eight if not the Final Four every year. It's important that all of us have a good showing at this tournament."

The Saints (8-2) enter the game led by 6-1 senior forward Hannah Dean, who leads the team in points (15.7), rebounds (7.4), assists (3.2), and steals (2.5).

While she's the only Saint averaging double digits in scoring, the Saints pack a deep roster with a bevy of capable scorers in any given game.

The Drovers (4-5) enter the classic after having lost to SAGU, 69-58.

"They're extremely athletic," Sayers said. "They play with a lot of high energy. When they get rolling they can really get rolling. The athleticism they have is something we don't typically see in our league."

A trio of Drovers average double figures in scoring, led by Vivian Holcomb. The 6-1 forward averages 15.8 points per game, followed by Reyna Ammons' 14.3 and 10.3 points from Taylor Alexander.

Carroll and USAO are two of the best rebounding teams in the NAIA. Carroll is ranked No. 3 in total rebound defense with 29 per game while USAO is ranked No. 6 with 30.7 total rebound defense per game.

Carroll is slated to play three games in consecutive days. Carroll will take on Menlo on Thursday and Our Lady of the Lake on Friday. The Saints also opened up the week with a road win over NCAA D-II Willamette, 58-33, on Monday.
