HELENA, Mont. -- A chance to tie atop the CCC standings and ensure strong playoff positioning still remains for the Carroll College Saints women's soccer team.
Two wins this weekend against Oregon Tech and Southern Oregon -- the No. 3 and No. 4 teams in the Cascade Collegiate Conference, respectively -- would give the Saints an identical record to No. 1 Eastern Oregon, who the Saints claimed a 3-3 tie earlier this season. If the Saints get the results, they'd earn a share of the CCC regular season championship.
The Saints clinched a playoff berth last weekend.
"First it's nice to be at home," Saints head coach Dave Thorvilson said. "I think the focus all season long has just been one game at a time with the opportunity to go to postseason. Although we've accomplished the postseason part, we still have a chance to share the Cascade Conference title, which would mean having to win both games."
Carroll has proven to be a team that can play in tight games. The Saints have played in five overtime games this season, posting a 2-1-2 record in such games.
Senior Peyton Netz and sophomore
Lizzie Sheldon lead the Saints' offense, having scored seven and six goals respectively.
OIT brings a defense that knows how to keep a clean sheet. The Owls are No. 22 in the NAIA in total shutouts.
The Saints will take on Southern Oregon on Sunday. The Raiders have one of the best goalkeepers in the NAIA in Kailey Lemon, who allows .56 goals per game, the No. 12 mark in the NAIA.
"They're the most difficult travel partners of anybody in our conference," Thorvilson said of OIT and SOU. "They're very, very good, very athletic and they both have a ton of wins. Sometimes you get to prepare for a good team and one not so good team during a weekend. In this weekend's case, both teams are very difficult."
In addition to the high-caliber opponents, the Saints will celebrate their five seniors. Senior Day will come on Sunday against SOU. CC will recognize seniors
Devan Murfitt,
Payton Netz,
Holly Anderson, Tayla Vaira and
Kirsten Girolami.
The Saints face OIT on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
