Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | by Carroll Sports Information

Saints Hold On for Gritty 79-78 Win Over Calgary

HELENA, Mont. – The fourth-ranked Carroll college men's basketball team survived a blistering shooting night from Canada's U-Sports No. 2 Calgary and held on for a 79-78 win over the Dinos behind 21 points from Match Burnham, 20 points from Ryan Imhoff and 14 points from Matt Wyman

The game was the second in two nights between the two teams. Carroll won last night's game 91-82. The win gives Carroll a 14-0 record, the best start in program history.

The game didn't look like it would be a barn burner early. The Saints started the game on a 7-0 run and led 24-13 with 10:24 left in the first half before forward Lars Schluter got going on the outside. He missed his first three-point attempt but hit his next seven straight, including six in the half.

Schlueter's big half propelled the Dinos back into the games, Calgary took a 37-36 lead with 51 seconds left in the half on a deep Schlueter three-pointer, but Imhoff hit a contested jumper to give Carroll a 38-37 lead at the break.

The Saints built a 44-39 advantage with 17:16 left in the game before Calgary tied the game at 48 with 14:21 left to play. Calgary took their first lead with a three-pointer with 11:47 remaining and held on to the lead until the three-minute mark when Lorel Johnson hit a bucket to tie the game at 69 and added a free throw to give the Saints lead which they would not relinquish.

The Saints were 15-15 from the line in the second half, and Wyman was 4-4 in the final minute to help the Saints hold on to the advantage. David Kapinga had a good attempt at a tying three-pointer in the final seconds for the Dinos, but it rattled in and out. A putback bucket cut the lead to one, but there was only .2 left on the clock after the ball entered the cylinder and the Saints would hold on for the win.

"Man, I am so impressed with our Fighting Saints ability to grapple, to stay connected and battle," head coach Carson Cunningham said. "That's a really good team, Calgary. Word on the Canadian street from what I hear was an expectation, at minimum, of a split. And I can see why that might be the thought. That team is really good. But our Fighting Saints displayed that moxie which has carried them time and again. We want to keep developing that and our togetherness and see how far we can take this thing. All our games are battles. We know we have challenges ahead. Something I really dig about these fellas is that they embrace the challenges."

Carroll was 27-48 (56.3 percent) from the field and 6-16 (37.5 percent) from the three-point line. Carroll again showed why they are the best free-throw shooting team in the nation, gong 19-20 (95 percent) from the line.  Burnham had is second consecutive 20-plus point game, going 5-8 from the three-point line in the process. He was 10-15 from the three-point line for the weekend.

Calgary was 30-58 (51.7 percent) from the field and 13-22 (59.1 percent) from the three-point line, led by Schlueter who was 8-10 from three-point range and 10-13 overall, he also had a game-high nine rebounds.

The Saints open the bulk of Frontier Conference play Next week, beginning with a pair of tough home games against No. 17 Montana Western Thursday and No. 11 Lewis-Clark State Saturday.
