Carroll Women's Soccer Hosts Providence Sunday

Helena, Mont – The Carroll College women's soccer team hosts the University of Providence Argos Sunday at 1:30 pm at Nelson Stadium.

The Fighting Saints bring in a 1-3-2 Conference Record (5-5-2 overall). Head coach Dave Thorvilson says that the Argos' 3-3 conference record is impressive.

"First, Providence is 3-3 this year in conference," he said. "They're having a great year. One of their sophomores is scoring a ton of goals, so for us, not a team we can ever take for granted."

Carroll has been shutout in three of the last four games, so attacking the goal was a main focus of practice this past week.

"Finding success in scoring goals means we've been working on a little bit of everything," Thorvilson said. "We've worked on defensive structure, and how to handle a bit of pace. Offensively, one of the things we've gotten away from is in the final third of the attack, we tend to be a little tenser, and our decision making hasn't been as good, so that's limiting our chances to score. We've worked on how to become more patient and not panic in the final third, which should create more chances which means we've also worked on finishing and creative side of things in the attacking third."

Thorvilson is looking to sophomore Taryn Neameyer to provide a spark on Sunday. Neameyer has recently seen time at center forward after primarily being slotted in the holding midfield position. Thorvilson credits her ability to get the ball no matter the part of the field as a reason for moving her around.

"Taryn is one of those kids who can just about play anywhere on the field, so trying to find the best spot for her ultimately," he said. "She's just a bit of a go-getter, and you want that type of kid that just wants to go win the ball whether it's in the air or on the ground so potentially playing her at forward works as well. She does well in the midfield for us so we could see her anywhere Sunday, we haven't decided quite yet."

Thorvilson also highlighted senior Christina Plank for having a great start to this season's campaign.

"Christina has had a good year for us in the midfield," he said. "We've had some success with some of our players, and some of our freshmen are starting to come on as well. We're hoping that we can play a lot of kids and find some combinations that work for us. Ultimately we're just hoping we'll be ready to play a great game and come away with a win."

A live video stream of Sunday's match will be available on the Carroll youtube channel.
