HELENA, Mont. – Kalee Junkermier scored 29 points and tied a school record with nine made threes to lead No. 17 Carroll College to a 70-55 win over Montana-Western, Thursday at the PE Center.
Bailey Snelling broke a 6-6 tie with a three-pointer 14:26 remaining in the first half and the Saints would lead the rest of the way en route to the win.
"We had a great effort accompanied by some great individual performances," head coach
Rachelle Sayers said. "
Kalee Junkermier was unbelievable tonight. She made everything we ran look good. But it wasn't just Kalee, it was everyone being where they were supposed to be and really being disciplined on both ends of the floor."
The Saints held the Bulldogs to 20-49 (.40.8 percent) shooting while hitting on 26-of-55 (47.3 percent). Carroll also outrebounded the Bulldogs 23-39, led by
Cassidy Hashley with 11 rebounds to go along with her 12 points.
"We have made a commitment to be better rebounders and it's paying off," Sayers said. "Cassi Hashley continues to dominate the paint for us and because of that, other players are having a lot of success. Our team is getting much better at finding the open player when teams are keying on her, trying to take our post play away. It was a fun game to watch."
Junkermier was nothing if not efficient. She was 10-of-15 from the field, including 9-of-12 from distance to tie
Trisha Rennaker's record from 1996 against Dickinson State. Rennaker was 9-of-16 from the three-point line. Baylee Watson was also a big contributor on the inside with 10 points.
Bailey Snelling led the Saints with five assists to go along with nine points.
It was the fourth consecutive win for the Saints and the ninth win in 11 games. Carroll moves to 15-6 overall and 6-2 in Frontier play. Western falls to 9-15 overall and 1-7 in the conference.
The Saints face a tough opponent Saturday in No. 4 Westminster. The Saints handed the Griffins their only Frontier loss of the season in a 55-50 game. The Griffins have won seven straight since then and have allowed an average of just 40.3 points per game over the last three games.
Sayers is excited for the battle between the two hottest teams in the Frontier Conference.
"We can finally talk about Westminster," Sayers said. "They are the No. 4 team in the country and it is going to be a tough game. We are looking forward to the challenge."
Tip off is at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the PE Center.
