GREAT FALLS, Mont. –
Baylee Watson made a layup with just over 20 seconds left to give Carroll College a 68-67 lead over the University of Great Falls then grabbed a rebound on the other end to seal the road win for the 18th ranked Saints over the No. 20 Argos Friday evening.
The game was a back-and-forth affair with 11 ties and 11 lead changes. Neither team built a lead larger than six points.
Carroll (16-7, 7-3 Frontier Conference) took an early 8-3 lead on free throws by
Alison Sullivan before the Argos went on an 11-4 run to take a 14-12 lead. After a four-point run by the Saints, Great Falls responded with an 8-0 run to take their biggest lead of the game. Carroll responded with a 6-0 run to tie the game at 22, but UGF ended the half with a 6-1 run to take a 28-23 lead at the break.
Great Falls (20-5, 7-3 FC) held on to the lead for most of the second half but the Saints wouldn't let the Argos extend their advantage to more than five points.
With just over a minute left in the game
Cassidy Hashley gave the Saints a 66-65 lead with a three-point play on a layup and a free throw.
The Argos answered with a shot from Lindsey Abramson to take a 67-66 lead. Watson answered for the Saints on a contested layup to take the 68-67 lead.
After a missed shot by Erin Legel and a UGF offensive rebound, the Argos had one more chance. Legal took an inbounds pass and dribble nearly from the left elbow around the top of the key and drove for the right handed layup. Her shot went over the rim and after a scrum for the ball Watson came down with the ball and her outlet pass found
Bailey Snelling who drove the length of the court as time expired.
The Saints were 24-of-62 (39.2 percent) from the field including 17-of-34 (50 percent) in the second half. UGF shot 22-of-58 (37.9 percent).
Carroll outrebounded the Argos 40-34.
Hashley scored a game-high 23 points and Watson had a team-high nine rebounds.
Kalee Junkermier scored 14 points for the Saints and Snelling scored 11. Nneka Nnadi led UGF with 18 points.
"It was a huge road win for us," head coach
Rachelle Sayers said. "We just battled. We made stopped when we needed to. I thought the leadership and toughness we got from Kalee and
Bailey Snelling tonight was what kept us going when we were struggling to score. Cassi Hashley is just really good and continues to get better every game. I just couldn't be prouder of this group."
Carroll is now 6-0 in conference road games and have won eight-straight games away from the PE Center.
The Saints play their second game in two games and third-straight game against a ranked opponent Saturday when they face No. 11 Montana State University-Northern.
Northern defeated Rocky Mountain 69-48.
The Saints and Skylights tipoff at 6 p.m.
