COSTA MESA, Calif. – Four Saints scored in double figures as the Carroll College men's basketball team rolled to an 85-55 win over Bethesda University Tuesday evening at the Bill Reynolds Holiday Classic on the campus of Vanguard University in Southern California.
Early it was all Bethesda as the Flames jumped out to an 11-5 early lead. Carroll battled back with an 8-0 run to take an 18-16 lead with 12:25 remaining.
The two teams traded baskets for a few possessions, but with Bethesda holding a 24-22 lead with 9:53 remaining in the first half, the Saints went on a 23-6 run to close the half and take a 45-30 lead into the break, including nine straight points to close the half.
Carroll kept the pressure on in the second half, outscoring the Flames 40-25 in the second half to cruise to the 30-point win.
Ryan Imhoff flirted with a triple-double for the second time in as many games with a game-high 18 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.
Matt Wyman added 16 points, Dane Warp 14 and
Match Burnham 11.
Carroll was 34-64 (53.1 percent) from the field and 6-15 (40 percent) from the three-point line.
The Saints were stellar on defense, notching 16 steals and forcing 22 turnovers while holding the Flames to 24-53 (45.3 percent) from the field and 4-15 (26.7 percent) from the three-point line.
Carroll outrebounded Bethesda 34-30.
"The fellas grappled and whipped around the apple, making some nice sauce," head coach Carson Cunningham said. "Lorel (Johnson) played another fantastic ball game at the point. The Chemist's (Imhoff) passing game was kinetic. Santos (Piqueras) was feeding folks. Really, it was great to see everyone moving the ball. It's fun to coach guys who share like that. Bethesda was knocking down tough shots early but the Fighting Saints stuck with it. Opening the second half strong helped matters too. We have a big one ahead of us tomorrow.
The Saints close out the tournament tomorrow with a game against tournament host and No. 22 Vanguard at 7 p.m. MST. Live stats and streaming will be available via the Vanguard Stretch Internet Portal.
