HELENA, Mont. – Carroll College men's basketball started the second half on a 17-2 run, holding Dickinson State scoreless for the first 8:20 of the frame en route to a 71-62 come from behind win Friday evening at the PE Center.
Zach Taylor led the way with 29 points and a team-high six rebounds to lead the rally for the Saints.
Carroll struggled in the first half, shooting 12-30 (40 percent) from the field and 1-7 (14.3 percent) from behind the arc in the first half. The two teams battled for much of the first but DSU built a 28-17 lead with 6:32 left in the first half. The 11-point lead would be the largest of the game for the Bluehawks and the Saints began to chip away.
Carroll cut the lead to 33-30 but back-to-back buckets in the final eight seconds gave DSU a 37-30 at the break.
The Bluehawks went into the locker room at half time with momentum weighing heavily on their side.
Taylor led the Fighting Saints with 15 points at halftime. No other Saint had more than five. Carroll also had 10 turnovers in the first half.
Dickinson State shared the ball evenly with five players scoring at least five points. The Bluehawks also turned the ball over twelve times, causing a sloppy first half for both teams.
Strong defense, sparking the run in the second half but offensively, Taylor and
Ryan Imhoff sparked the run. Taylor scored five points in the stretch and Imhoff had four.
Carroll never looked back and led by as much as 16 points with 2:50 left to play in the game. The second half saw improvement by the Saints with 13-23 (56.5 percent) shooting from the field. Carroll was also strong from the line, shooting 14-17 (82.4 percent).
Matt Wyman was the only Saint to join Taylor in double figures with 10. Imhoff had six blocks to go with eight points.
Dickinson State was led overall by Marcus White and Ryan Clark, who scored 20 and 15 points, respectively.
The win moves the Saints to 6-0 on the year, their best start since the 2008-09 season. Dickinson falls to 3-3 on the year.
Carroll is back in action Saturday night against the Jamestown University Jimmies at approximately 7:30 p.m. in the PE Center. The game follows a neutral-site game between the University of Great Falls and DSU scheduled at 5:30 at the PE Center.
