Carroll tops UM-Western for fifth-straight win

DILLON, Mont. – The senior guard duo of Kalee Junkermier and Bailey Snelling combined for 40 points to lead the No. 24 Carroll College Saints to a 64-59 road win over the University of Montana-Western Bulldogs, Saturday. It was the fifth consecutive win for the Saints and concluded a 2-0 weekend start to Frontier Conference play.

"We knew it would be a battle and it was. It is never easy here," head coach Rachelle Sayer said. "Give Western credit, they executed their game plan well. We were pretty stagnant on both ends, but in the end, we have Kalee Junkermier and Bailey Snelling and they made plays when we needed them."

The Saints never trailed the entire game, they started early building a 19-8 lead just eight minutes into the action. Western cut Carroll lead to 29-23 at the break.

The Bulldogs attacked to start the second half. They started the half on a 7-3 run to cut the lead to 32-30 with 18:01 to play in the half. The Saints responded with a 10-2 run over the next seven minutes to put the Saints up 42-32.

The Bulldogs weren't done, Western battled back and cut the lead to 59-56 with just 34 second remaining but the Saints were 5-of-6 from the line in the waning seconds to earn the five-point win.

Junkermier led the Saints with 25 points, Snelling scored 15 and Cassidy Hashley added 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds, tied for the team lead with Jordan Johnston.

Carroll was 20-of-49 (40.8 percent) from the field and tallied 42 rebounds.

The Saints move to 11-4 overall and 2-0 in Frontier Conference play.

"Starting off 2-0 on the road in conference is huge," Sayers said. "But it's back to work on Monday because we will have our hands full next week."

The Saints host No. 15 MSU-Northern Thursday in the first home, Frontier Conference game of the season. The Skylights are 17-1 on the season and 2-0 in conference play after defeating Rolling Montana Tech 78-37 on Thursday and sneaking out a 63-61 win over No. 12 Lewis-Clark State Saturday.
