HELENA, Mont. - The Carroll College Cheer and Dance teams, both in their first season, will make their NAIA competitive debuts on Saturday at the Dickinson State Triangular in Dickinson, N.D.

Saturday will be a monumental first step for collegiate spirit squads in Montana. For the first time ever, both the Carroll College Cheer team, and newly-formed Dance teams will compete in an NAIA recognized competition, with both teams taking on Dickinson State and Northwestern (Iowa) in a pair of head-to-heads.

The two teams will be the first of any Montana institution, both NAIA and NCAA, to compete as a recognized competitive sport.

Cheer is scored based on both difficulty and execution by a panel of officials in a number of different areas - partner/group stunts, pyramids, basket tosses, standing tumbling, running tumbling, jumps, as well as overall routine. The overall routine scores are a combination of choreography, showmanship/general impression, overall difficulty and overall execution.

Dance is scored based on both difficulty and execution by a panel of officials in areas including - jazz, pop, hip hop, team turn sequence, and overall routine. The overall routine scores are a combination of staging and transitions, uniformity, choreography, overall degree of difficulty, performance impression, team turn, and team leap.

The DSU Triangular will begin at 11 a.m. and will consist of four duals, starting with the dance teams. Carroll and Northwestern will be the only two Dance teams competing on Saturday, while all three schools will compete in the cheer portion of the event.
