GREAT FALLS, Mont. - The Carroll Men's Basketball team completed a comeback for the ages on Friday night featuring a buzzer-beating three-pointer to lift the Saints over Providence 93-92 on their way to the Frontier Conference Championship game.
The Fighting Saints (19-10, 12-3) needed every last tick of the 40 minutes of game time, but
James Lang (Portland, Ore. / R-SO) lifted Carroll to one of the most memorable wins in program history.
Carroll found themselves in a hole early. A hot-shooting Argo team opened the game on a 9-0 run, and the Saints would be forced to play from behind for the remainder of the game.
Providence seemingly couldn't miss in the first half, and every time Carroll seemed to make a run the Argos had an answer. The Argos shot 62 percent from the floor in the first half, and were well above average from three-point range (56 percent). Jaylin Reed made several threes from well-beyond the arc to help give Providence a 48-41 lead at the break, even though Carroll's trio of starting guards combined for 35 first half points.
Near the midway point of the second half, the Saints managed to trim the Argo lead to as little as six points, but Providence would not surrender.
With just three minutes remaining, Providence stretched their lead to a game-high 14 points, 85-71, but Carroll found a way to end the game on a 22-7 run.
An intense full court press, big time shot-making, and level-headed play saw Carroll slowly creep back into the fray. By the 30-second mark, the Argo lead was cut to just two points. A pair of free throws on the Providence side, and a
Kendall Moore (Dayton, Ohio / JR) layup on the other end would see Carroll trail by two with just six seconds remaining.
From there, chaos only the month of March can produce, ensued.
Providence's Reed caught an inbound pass and appeared to have a game-sealing dunk in hand, but a pure effort play from
Andrew Cook (Huntington Beach, Calif. / JR) to chase him down and foul would help decide the game. Cook's foul, while hard, was clean. Reed retaliated and was assessed a technical foul.Â
Both Reed and
James Lang made a pair of free throws on each end of the court, and Carroll was awarded possession due to the dead ball contact tech called on Reed.
With just two seconds remaining, Lang caught an inbound pass near half court, took one dribble before pulling up and drilling a 40-footer as time expired to give Carroll the semifinal win and a date with Montana Tech in tomorrow's championship game at 5 p.m.
"It just felt good coming out of my hands." said Lang. "Right when I released it I thought 'It looks good' so I was pretty confident it was going down. Nothing was going through my head once it went in, I just kind of stood there for a second and watched my guys come towards me, and that was fun."
Lang's memorable shot capped an outstanding 19-point effort for the redshirt-sophomore.
Kendall Moore led all scorers on the night, knocking down big shot after big shot and finishing with 29 points.
Andrew Cook, who made the game-saving foul finished with 21 points and seven boards.
Davien Harris-Williams had a great effort in the Providence loss, leading his team with 28 points.
The Saints will turn all their attention towards a fourth meeting with Montana Tech tomorrow night, this time on neutral ground with the league's auto-bid on the line.
Tip off is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Four Seasons Arena in Great Falls.
