BUTTE, Mont. - The Carroll College Golf teams began their 2023-24 campaign today at the Oredigger Invite. The Carroll Women sit in third, while the Carroll Men's team sits in fifth after one day at the Butte Country Club.
The Carroll Men didn't quite have the start they would have hoped for on day one, sitting fifth out of seven teams after 36 holes of play. The season is young, however, and the underclass-laden roster will have plenty of opportunity for growth.
The Men posted a two-round total of 635 (312, 323) on the first day. Freshman
TJ Fierling (North Bend, Wash. / FR) led the way for the Saints on day one. Fierling fired an opening round 74 in the morning, and followed that up with a 75 in the afternoon that saw him birdie hole No. 18 to end his first day.
Two other Saints,
Caleb Spangler (Havre, Mont. / SO) and
JT Slivinski (Montpelier, Idaho / FR) also shot rounds in the 70's this morning (Spangler 76, Slivinski 78).
The Carroll Women were also paced by a freshman on the first day.
Celi Chapman (Montana City, Mont. / FR) carded an 81 in her collegiate debut, highlighted by a birdie on No. 12.Â
Chapman was followed closely by
Katie Fagg (Missoula, Mont. / SR) who finished her first round with an 82.
As a team, the Carroll Women finished at 346 for the day, having some ground to cover on day two.
Rocky Mountain College holds the lead in both the Men's and Women's events (Men - 576, Women - 312).
Play will resume tomorrow morning for the final round, with both teams looking to chase down the teams in front of them.
