Fierling's Historic Ace Highlights Solid Final Round for Carroll Golf

CLARKSTON, Wash. - Both Carroll Golf teams saw improved scores across the board, and program history was made on the Men's side of the final round of the Warrior Spring Classic, hosted by Lewis-Clark State at Red Wolf Golf Club on Tuesday.

For the first time during a competitive round in program history, a Fighting Saint jotted a "1" down on their scorecard, as TJ Fierling (North Bend, Wash. / JR) dunked one on the 152-yard par three third hole on Tuesday.

"I had no clue it went in" said Fierling of his hole in one. "It was a front pin behind the bunker. I saw Hudson (Reinke) walking in the distance, and once I saw him jumping up and down I knew something special had happened."

"... I still don't even know if it has truly hit me."

Fierling's ace was part of a big inward nine holes across the board for the Carroll Men. Over the first nine holes of the day, only one birdie was recorded, a Fierling three on the par four 14th-hole. Once the shot fell, however, scores throughout the team dropped with it. In total, eight birdies - plus the ace - were recorded by the Carroll Men over the final nine holes of the tournament. Tanner Cromwell (Anaconda, Mont. / SO) and JT Slivinski (Montpelier, Idaho / JR) each posted a trio of birdies on their back-nines, while Hudson Reinke (Filer, Idaho / SO) added in a pair of his own.

The birdie bonanza down the stretch capped a much improved final round for the Men's team, as Fierling, Cromwell, Reinke, and Slivinski all fired identical final round 74's (+2), for a final day team score of 296 - the program's best effort this season.

Cromwell led the Saints with a nine-over week (75-76-74) that saw him finish at No. 24 in the individual competition. Kyle Kennah (Laurel, Mont. / SO) finished 34th at 15-over for the week (75-80-76). Fierling was tied for 36th, finishing at +17 (79-80-74), Reinke placed 40th at +20 (78-84-74), while Slivinski went 82-83-74 for the week.

An equally interesting string of birdies highlighted a good final round for the Carroll Women as well.

Twin sisters Ellie Stastny (Murtaugh, Idaho / SO) and Alli Stastny (Murtaugh, Idaho / SO) both posted back-to-back birdies on the par five 12th and par four 13th holes.

Ellie led the Saints for the week, finishing 14th in the individual competition at +23 with rounds of 86 and 81. Alli was not far behind, shooting a final round 84 to jump into 17th place on the leaderboard. Stella Claridge (Kalispell, Mont. / SR) was one stroke behind, posting rounds of 85-89 to finish at +30, while Addison Slivinski (Montpelier, Idaho / FR) rounded out the Carroll scoring at +36 (93-87).

While scores improved for both teams in the final round, neither was able to make up enough ground in the team competition. The Carroll Men finished eighth at +58 (3-7-319-296), while the Women took fourth at +118 (353-341).

LC-State, the event's host school, swept both medalist honors as well as the team titles. The Men finished at 20-under, led by Kye Krall who won the event at 10-under for the week. The Women finished at +36, with Jane Berry leading the charge at +6 for the event.

The next officially scheduled event of the spring for the Fighting Saints is the Frontier Conference Championships at Papago Golf Club in Phoenix next month, but additional events prior are still a possibility.
