HELENA, Mont. – Friday night in the PE Center, the Carroll College Men's Basketball team knocked off Mount Vernon Nazarene in a relatively comfortable 72-58 victory. Tonight's win over Mount Vernon Nazarene extends Carroll's season to the second round of the NAIA National Tournament.
The game started nip and tuck between the Cougars and Saints, but the Saints pulled away for a 35-27 advantage at the first half buzzer.
The Saints followed up a strong defensive first half with another strong defensive second half, only giving up 31 points. In addition to the Saints limiting the Cougar scoring, the 18 turnovers forced by Carroll proved crucial in Friday night's win.
Leading the Saints offensive attack tonight yet again was Shamrock Campbell with 25 points, going 9-17 from the field, including 5-9 from three point land. Campbell also added seven assists and two steals to his line. Johnny Hillman was also big in getting the Saints offense going, putting up 10 points of his own, all in the first half.
On the glass Brendan Temple, Lowell Chan, and Murat Guzelocak all registered eight rebounds, while Guzelocak hauled in five offensive boards that proved pivotal in the Saints' second chance opportunities.
For the Cougars, Kade Ruegsegger led the charge with 17 points on 4-7 from three and Eric McLaughlin also registered double figures with 10 of his own.
Next up for the three-seed Saints will be six-seed Jamestown, Saturday night at the PE Center, for the right to move onto the field of 16 in Kansas City and a right to fight for the NAIA National Title. Tip-off will be at 7 p.m.
