HELENA, Mont. -- The Carroll College track and field team got started off right at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships on Thursday in Brookings, South Dakota.
"The kids are running hard," Saints coach
Harry Clark said. "I'm so excited for them. It's fun to watch. All these young kids got to run at nationals, so that's our future coming up. They got to see how fast a national meet is."
The Saints had big days from freshman Lee Walburn and the distance medley relay on Thursday.
Walburn sits in eighth after Day One of the heptathlon with 2,555 points. Walburn had three personal records on the day in the 60-meter race, long jump and shot put, while tying his PR in the high jump.
"He's having a good time doing it," Clark said. "He's super intense but he's having fun doing it. This is a big event for a freshman. He looks good and he's having fun."
Walburn ran a 7.36 60, jumped 6.20 meters in the long jump, shot put 11.45 meters and hit a high jump of 1.76 meters. He'll finish out Friday in the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000.
The women's distance medley team, made up of Natalie Yocum, Brooke Endy, Elly Machado and Sam Mundel, placed third in the prelims with a time of 12:02.63, which was the second best time overall. They qualified for Saturday's final.
"Our women's DMR team just crushed it," Clark said. "They looked so good. Yocum killed it first leg. They all ran so hard. They just wanted it. And that's an hour after the mile relay, Brooke came back and ran the 400 and got us into first with her leg. Elly came back and ran the 800 leg after running the 400. It was a big challenge for them.
