EDITOR'S NOTE: This article originally stated two Saints qualified for nationals, citing 2019's qualification standards. Madde Boles' jump of 1.63 meters did not meet the qualification standard of 2020. While the competition occurred in the 2019 calendar year, the 2020 standards required a higher jump to qualify than 2019's lower standard. This article has been edited to reflect that.
HELENA, Mont. -- The Carroll College Fighting Saints indoor track and field team got their feet wet on Friday, competing against NCAA D-I talent at the Bobcat Preview at Montana State in
Bozeman, Montana.
It was a day of many firsts for the Saints. A few Saints used the first meet of the season to qualify for nationals, while freshmen competed in their first college track and field event.
"I was super stoked with how hard our kids competed," Saints coach
Harry Clark said. "To see where we're at this time of the year, especially as freshmen. I thought they did an outstanding job today."
Kelsey Bassett, dealing with some nagging pains, qualified in the pole vault, climbing over a height of 3.5 meters to nab the NAIA B-Standard.
Freshman Madde Boles nearly surpassed the NAIA B-Standard in the high jump, clearing 1.63 meters (5-foot-4.25) in her first college track meet.
Christopher Abell nearly hit the qualifying standard in the 60-meter hurdles, running a time of 8.58. The NAIA B Qualifying Standard is 8.42.
Carroll's men's 4x400 relay -- comprised of Ozzy Wexler, Chad Hemsley, Alex Olmes and Wade Luly -- won the event, finishing in a time of 3:26.21 and narrowly missing the qualifying standard of 3:23.5.
Saints senior Sam Mundel won the one-mile run, finishing in a time of 5:16.66.
Reghan Worley won the 5,000-meter race in a time of 19:05.36.
Wade Luly won the men's 400-meter race, finishing with a time of 51.30.
Many Saints made their first mark on Friday, and will have at least four more chances to punch a ticket to nationals on Feb. 5 in Brookings, South Dakota. That next chance comes on January 10 at the Snake River Open.
