Carroll volleyball goes 2-0 to open Providence tournament

HELENA -- The Carroll College volleyball team went 2-0 on Friday to open up the University of Providence Best Western Plus Heritage Inn Fall Classic.

The Saints swept Providence Christian College and Benedictine - Mesa to start the tourney with a pair of wins.

"Rayna (Pilgeram) ran the offense so well today and Brielle (Bumgarner) and Lexi (Mikkelson) took advantage of some of those sets," Saints volleyball coach Maureen Boyle said. "Our defense was strong and we won most long rallies. Great day."

Carroll defeated PCC 3-0, 25-18, 25-19 and 25-18.

Pilgeram unofficially finished the first set with a .333 hitting percentage and 22 assists.

Bumgarner and Christy Morgan combined for 13 blocks against PCC.

The Saints controlled their next match with Benedictine, too, winning in straight games, 25-17, 25-18, 25-23.

Bumgarner powered the Saints' hitting against Benedictine, hitting for .444 while Pilgeram set up the Saints 30 times.

Ayla Carpenter also had 23 digs in second match sweep.

The Saints are back in action on Saturday with matches against Medicine Hat at 10 a.m. and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University at 4 p.m.
