Carroll women's soccer faces one final road test before conference

HELENA -- It's the final tuneup before the Carroll College Saints women's team rolls into the Cascade Collegiate Conference.

The Saints are headed to Walla Walla, Wash., this weekend to face Whitman College on Saturday and Whitworth on Sunday.

"Just trying to clean up a little bit of our lineup," Saints head coach Dave Thorvilson said. Thorvilson is looking to answer a few more questions this weekend before the regular season conference schedule begins.

"What's the best kind of pairings? Who works well together? Who's going to come off the bench? Who is starting? It's our last weekend to work on those," he said.

The Saints also are searching for their first win of the season on Saturday as they take on Whitman College.

The NCAA D-III affiliated Whitman enters the game with a 0-1-1 record. The Blues fell to the University of Chicago 5-0 and earned a 1-1 tie in double overtime against Illinois Institute of Technology earlier this season.

Carroll gets Whitworth (1-1) on Sunday. The Pirates have a win over Franklin & Marshall (2-1, 2OT) and a 4-0 loss to Messiah.

Carroll (0-4) knows this weekend is about more than seeking wins as it enters a challenging conference schedule this season that sees the Saints mostly on the road. Seven of the Saints' 12 conference games are on the road.

"Obviously, it's a game and we want to win so we're focusing a little bit on the opponent as well," Thorvilson said. "But we're preparing ourselves for a different conference schedule. We're on the road quite a bit this year."

The first match kicks off at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
