GREAT FALLS, Mont. – Kyle Nichol launched a baseline three with under five seconds to play, the shot rattled off of the front of the backboard, and the sixth-ranked Carroll College men fell to Providence 59-58, breaking a six-game win streak.
The loss doesn't eliminate Carroll's Frontier regular-season title hopes, but it leaves the Saints with no room for error. Carroll is a game back of Montana Western with two to play, including the season finale against the Bulldogs in Helena Saturday.
The game was a back and forth battle from the beginning.
The Saints built a 17-11 lead with 8:52 left in the first half, but Providence responded to take a 23-22 lead with 2:00 minutes left, the Saints countered with a 7-0 run to close the half with a 32-26 lead.
Providence took a 46-42 lead with 11:35 to play, but Carroll went on a 10-0 run to take a 54-48 lead with 5:21 to play. The Argos were not out of it and battled back to take a 58-56 lead. The Saints tied it with a bucket from
Matt Wyman with just over a minute to play, but Deshaun Rice with 1-2 from the line and the Saints failed to capitalize in the waning seconds, giving the Argos the win.
Carroll shot uncharacteristically low 22-50 (44.0 percent) from the field and failed to get to the free throw line, shooting just eight for the game.
Match Burnham had a game-high 16 points and
Matt Wyman added 12.
Providence was 23-51 (45.1 percent) from the field and 8-12 (36.4 percent) from the three-point line, including 5-10 in the second half.
