Carroll opens Frontier Conference tournament against Lewis-Clark State in Butte

HELENA, Mont. -- For the second time in less than a week, the Carroll College Saints volleyball team will tangle with Lewis-Clark State College.

This time on a neutral court. And this time, for higher stakes.

The No. 5-seeded Saints face the No. 4-seeded Warriors on Thursday in Butte at the Frontier Conference Volleyball Tournament.

"Everybody is 0-0 and I think that that helps us a little bit," Saints coach Moe Boyle said. "Excited to see how we respond in the conference tournament and see what they can do with it."

Carroll (19-14, 6-6) and LCSC (16-8, 6-6) split their regular season series, with both team winning on its own home court, though it was the Warriors that won most recently with a 3-0 sweep in Lewiston, Idaho, last week.

Rachel Gregg leads the Frontier in kills per set at 3.8, as part of the conference-leading offense that averages 13.1 kills per set.

Carroll counters with senior Brielle Bumgarner who leads the Frontier with her .273 hitting percentage and a team-high 334 kills. She's the Frontier's best blocker with 132 total.

Senior Rayna Pilgeram leads the team with 852 assists while junior Ayla Carpenter has 559 digs.

The Saints will return to Butte for the second time in a week. They played Montana Tech in their penultimate game of the season last week.

"I am excited not to be playing Tech on their home court to begin the tournament because I think we are in a pretty good spot," Boyle said. "To play at 2 in the afternoon where we don't have to wait all day is also a bonus. I'm excited about what we have in store for tomorrow."

The Saints and Warriors are set to begin at 2 p.m. in Butte.
