HELENA, Mont. – The Carroll College Volleyball team completed both a weekend sweep, and season sweep of Mayville State, winning a four-set battle at the PE Center.
Saturday's win over the Comets (2-21, 2-16) was an important one, securing a postseason berth for the Fighting Saints (16-9, 11-7).
The first set of the afternoon was back-and-forth through the early stages. Several Carroll attack errors would keep the Comets in contention before
Jansyn Carrizales (Sunnyside, Wash. / SR) toed the line to serve tied 11-11. Carrizales, as she's done so many times this season, provided a spark with an ace. From there, the attack picked up, with
McKaila Balcom (Pasco, Wash. / SR),
Lauren Heuiser (Helena, Mont. / SR), and
Sofia Kimmel (Bozeman, Mont. / SO) each putting up multiple kills in a quick 10-0 run. The Comets managed just one more point, as Carroll stormed to a 25-12 win in the first.
The Saints were not without their chances to take control in the second set, but an uncharacteristically low .024 attack percentage in the frame would allow a hot-hitting Mayville State side to climb back in and even things up at 1-1.
A competitive third set saw both teams knotted at 18-18 following several small runs on each side. A
Jansyn Carrizales dump would spark a late Carroll run, as
Kaylen Hay,
Lauren Heuiser, and
Alli Devine (Wasilla, Alaska / R-FR) kills would give the Saints a 7-2 surge to take the frame.
Nothing came easy all afternoon long, and the fourth frame proved to be the toughest battle of them all. Neither side led by more than three points, but the Saints held a 23-20 advantage late. The Comets rattled-off three-straight, forcing the set into extra points, but
Kaylen Hay and
Birdie Heuiser (Helena, Mont. / SO) would provide the final blows, lifting Carroll to a 27-25 win.
Kaylen Hay recorded a career-high 17 kills in the win, leading all players.
Lauren Heuiser added 12, while Birdie kicked-in nine kills to round out the Carroll leaders.
Lauren Fox (Bozeman, Mont. / SO) led the Saints with 24 assists on the day, while
Jansyn Carrizales posted a 22-assist, 17-dig double-double.
The Saints will now get ready for their final road trip of the regular season, heading to Montana Western and Montana Tech next weekend.
