HELENA, Mont. – The Carroll College men's soccer team takes to the road for the first time this season for a neutral-site match against The Master's (Calif.) Saturday before facing former Frontier Conference foe Westminster on their home field Sunday.
The Saints are 1-1 on the season with a 3-2 overtime loss to Lethbridge and a 4-1 win over DII MSU Billings on their record.
Carroll will look to build on a strong performance against MSUB when they face the Mustangs at 1 p.m. in Salt Lake City. The Master's is 1-0 on the year after topping Westminster 2-0 earlier today on the Griffins' home field.
The Saints fell 1-2 against the Mustangs a season ago, the first of 13 wins on the season for the Master's.
"The Master's is a great program, traditionally they are an NAIA tournament team and they have a lot of international players on the roster," head coach
Doug Mello said. "We will have to play well to come out with a win and the task is made more difficult with the players who won't be able to play."
Carroll will play the weekend shorthanded. Four Saints starters are injured including leading scorer
Isaac Bostrom and captain
Jacob Groh will miss the weekend because of ROTC drills.
"It isn't the most ideal situation but it is a great opportunity to play some of the younger players, get them into the system and see what they can do," Mello said. "The key will be conference play and this a great opportunity to improve everyone as a team and get ready for Cascade play. That is the real goal."
Sunday, the Saints play Westminster and the NCAA DII Griffins will bring another tough challenge for Carroll. A season ago, the Saints picked up a 1-0 win in Salt Lake City.
"Westminster has a good side and we have a lot of work to do but we hope to come home with two victories, that is the reason we came down here," Mello said.
Live stats for both matches will be available via the Westminster website.
